OFF THE GRID IN ALASKA

Navigating travel restrictions and new protocols has not been easy but we were very fortunate to get off the grid and return to Alaska for a month. Eric got to meet my extended family, catch and smoke some of our own subsistence salmon, learn what sea sickness feels like, and enjoy a little bit of time away from work. Catching salmon with Eric with a gill net was a fun change from my commercial purse seining fishing history. Smoking fish is about a 2 week process.

Our Chignik homestead has been in the family for a long time and remains a special place to me. So it was sweet to walk down the gravel roads and recall the experiences of much of my childhood; it’s a place unlike anywhere else I have ever been. It’s such a wilderness that we can even fish outside our front door. Catching salmon with Eric with a gill net was a fun change from my commercial purse seining fishing history.

My nephew came to visit. Here is doing exactly what we did as kids. Playing boats. Papa made him a new boat and of course he named it after his momma, Memry Anne.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple  beauty of nature. I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles. – Anne Frank
